Abstract

Introduction. The present review considers the problems of aesthetical complications in patients who underwent upper
blepharoplasty.

Aim: of the study presented below is to examine the literature on the issues of potential aesthetical complications that
may arise during upper blepharoplasty. Improvement of the field of vision and / or appearance of the area around the eyes
can be found as an important goal of surgery.
Research strategy. The search and selection of publications reflecting the topic of possible aesthetical complications in
upper blepharoplasty were carried out in the following clusters: firstly, including but not limited by, the indexed databases
such as Pubmed, Scopus and Web of Science, and secondly, e-Library databases (electronic library). The Mendeley system,
which is a bibliographic extension editor, was widely used during out research activity. We also analysed a large number of
articles in English. Study depth 10 years. Key words have been chosen as the following concepts: upper blepharoplasty;
Asian blepharoplasty; aesthetical complications; upper eyelid surgery. The total number of literary sources found reached the
figure of 167, including 47 publications applied by us for further analysis.
Results. Experts in aesthetic medicine divide the complications and post-factors that occur after eyelid surgery into the
following categories: functional, aesthetic, and their combination. Complications such eyelid asymmetry, supratarsal fold
asymmetry, multiple folds, weakening or disappearance of the fold, deformation and excessively high fold, round eyes, eyelid
retraction, blepharoptosis, rounding of the lateral canthus, visible scars, medial canthal webbing, pigmentation, change in
sensitivity, puffiness of the upper eyelid, cysts and granulomas etc. all refer to postoperative aesthetical problems being a
consequence of upper blepharoplasty. We directed the potential of our efforts towards this aspect of research to a detailed
analysis of the currently available medical literature. Our intention has been to ensure that each issue in this document to be
dealt with individually.
Conclusions. A more detailed analysis of aesthetical complications and post-factors that occur during upper
blepharoplasty surgery will help reduce the incidence of undesirable consequences and improve postoperative outcome. We
pay special attention to one of the most important factors, namely, an increase in the level of patient satisfaction with the
operation results. A more detailed and careful study of this topic will certainly also contribute to the improvement of the
methods of perioperative management of patients undergoing upper blepharoplasty.
